UK to get citywide wireless internet - 3rd January 2006

With wireless hotspots becoming more available in the US, it is finally coming to the UK where citywide wireless coverage is planned for 9 major cities, and is expected to be available to 4 million people, no just in cafes, bars and restaurants but an entire urban area.

The service will be accessible by any Wi-Fi enabled device, including laptops, mobile phones, PSP and PDAs, to use the internet and make cheap phone calls.

Currently small hotspots exist in various places, such as the Nintendo wireless hotspots in McDonalds and BT Openzone in service stations and airports, this service however will be available through multiple operators.

"The Cloud" is the firm setting up this plan, with 6000 hotspots already available by Cloud in 3 European countries and hundreds more planned in these 9 cities as well as train operators already installing Wi-Max along major routes, 2006 should be a good year for mobility. More wireless coverage for more UK cities will be announced later this year, and the current rollout should be completed by March. Canary Wharf in London is currently holds the largest wireless hotspot in Europe, but the new plans will overtake this and will be available in:

  • Edinburgh
  • Leeds
  • Manchester
  • Birmingham
  • Nottingham
  • Oxford
  • Cambridge
  • Liverpool
  • Kensington, London
  • Chelsea, London
  • Islington, London

With the following operators:

  • BT Openzone
  • O2
  • SpkypeZones
  • Ninento Wi-Fi
